Due to the “Shining Path”(terrorists group), foreigners did not hunt in Peru for over 30 years. Now that Shining Path has been disbanded, Peru is ready for visiting hunters. During May 2005 Fin & Feather’s owner, Charles Arndt, traveled to Peru to hunt and research the situation. This trip proved to be worthwhile from the standpoint of time and money invested, in this safe and interesting country.

The main reason to hunt waterfowl in Peru is to collect Andean geese & several duck species that are very limited elsewhere. Hunting is confined to grassy valleys & ponds scattered throughout the Andes Mountains. While hunting this beautiful area you will witness Inca herdsman, dressed in their colorful native dress, tending flocks of Alpaca, Llama’s, and Vicuna’s. Their use of native rock in corral and house building is masterful. Hunting this area is truly a “World Class” experience. Be sure to take your camera.

Andes Mountain Hunt:

This is a most unusual waterfowl hunt, as you do not use decoys or a blind. The normal procedure is to ride the mountain roads looking for geese or ducks feeding or resting. Once birds are located the van stops, you get out quietly, then jump-shoot your targets. Fin & Feather’s success rate of the five groups hunting the mountain valleys has been between 80 to 100% of the species listed below. Your targets are Andean geese, Crested, Ruddy, and Torrent duck, Yellow-billed Pintail & Puna Teal. This is not a hot gun-hunt but truly for species collection, and it’s dependable!

S.W. Peru Pacific Coastal Duck Hunt (Program 2)

You have never hunted Cinnamon Teal numbers, as you will here. Located between the Pacific beaches and adjacent rice & grain fields, runs a band of marsh and freshwater ponds that hold what has to be the world’s largest concentration of Cinnamon’s. Charles hunted this area for 30 minutes the afternoon of arrival and picked up 13 Teal. The next morning his first stop produced 25 Teal, and another 25 Teal at the second stop. All of this shooting took place between daylight and 11:00am. More could have been hunted, but why? What an experience!

I am convinced the largest concentration of Cinnamon Teal, in the world, is located in the marshes, lakes, and ponds adjacent to the Pacific Coast beaches of s.w. Peru.

Charles Arndt - Cinnamon Teal
While hunting in the US a good day on Cinnamon Teal is one or two. How would like to be placed in a natural brush blind, sitting on a bucket full of ammunition, hunting beautiful Cinnamon Teal over decoys, and only your hunting partners within sight.

There are almost no local hunters in the area, and foreign hunting traffic has been non-existent for the last 30 years. You can read this excited report, look at the pictures, but there is nothing like personal experience in this newly opened “Duck Hunting Bonanza”.

For the 2008 season Fin & Feather & our Peruvian Outfitter have decided to limit each group to a 3 day / 4 night hunt program. However, the duck limit will be determined by 10 boxes of ammo, per day, if you wish to shoot that much, not a specific number of ducks. Based on the number of ducks harvested in 2008 the ammo availabity could be adjusted down somewhat for future seasons.
